Remembering Doctor Thomas
Updated: May 31, 2020
The other day I got a phone call from a good friend who had a bitch in whelp. She had worked arduously to free a puppy caught in the dam's birth canal and she was, at this point, physically and emotionally exhausted. I could hear the worry in her voice as she recounted what had been happening.
I'm not a veterinarian and I'm sure there are other breeders out there who have gotten their dogs through some really close calls under similar conditions. Anyway, I could hear the words of Doctor Gene Thomas of Tallavast Dachshunds play back in my memory as I told her what he shared with me so long ago.
I don't know how much it helped, but she was able to free the puppy from where it was caught up and continue whelping her litter. It occurs to me that while we recognize the dogs and puppies produced by different breeders as their legacy, it is also the stories and the knowledge they impart that is their legacy as well. Today, I remember and thank Dr Thomas for all the kindness and knowledge he shared with so many.
